Over the past year, we’ve made significant investments to enhance safety across UK, including:
  • Increased UKPD patrols during late-night hours on campus
  • Enhanced lighting in key areas — with new permanent fixtures underway
  • Upgraded security in residence halls and parking garages
  • Strengthened partnerships with the City of Lexington, Lexington Police and local businesses
In addition to the investments we made last year, this year we are:
  • Deploying a state-of-the-art mobile police unit on North Campus, near Good Samaritan Hospital
  • Enhancing residence hall security with cameras and access controls
  • Installing new permanent lighting along Winslow and Scott Street
  • Implementing a first responder drone program to enhance emergency response
  • Introducing SafeZone, our new campus safety app designed to give you fast, easy access to help when you need it

Staying Wildcat Ready: Tips, News & Updates

The continued commitment to our campus community

As students return to the University of Kentucky this fall, campus safety remains a top priority. UK Police Department (UKPD) Chief Joe Monroe announced a series of new initiatives and resources designed to build on the university’s ongoing efforts to create a safe, welcoming environment for all Wildcats.

Welcome to UK from Chief Joe Monroe

Welcome to the Big Blue Nation, Wildcats.

I’m Joe Monroe, Chief of Police here at the University of Kentucky. As you begin your time at UK, I want to personally welcome you and assure you that your safety is a top priority — every day, in every part of campus.

Register for the Self Defense Tactics and Risk Reduction (S.T.A.R.R.) Program

The STARR Program is designed to empower participants with practical tools and confidence to recognize, avoid and respond to potentially dangerous situations. Through hands-on instruction, participants learn techniques for awareness, prevention and physical defense.

At the University of Kentucky, safety is a shared responsibility — and we all have a role to play. Wildcat Ready is about being prepared, staying aware and looking out for one another. Together, we’re building a culture of safety rooted in care, readiness and respect.
